• How to prevent Nautilus to take over the desktop instead of Xfce4

Run nautilus this way:

nautilus --no-desktop

or modify /usr/share/applications/nautilus-autorun-software.desktop to have

Exec=nautilus-autorun-software --no-desktop %u

• Make Thunderbird to take care of the link in Firefox instead of Konqueror

update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

Note: adding the http(s) keys (as network.protocol-handler.app.http) in Thunderbird 3.1.6 (Xubuntu 10.10/FF 3.6.12) didn't work.

• Changing plymouth themes

apt-get install plymouth-theme-*
update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

• finding out the current version

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
